DIY by train or a guided tour?
We compared both ways on cost, time and how much of Nikko you can fit in. The short version: the train is cheaper and more flexible around the shrines; a tour is the easier way to add Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji, which sit up a mountain road 40–50 min from the stations by bus.
| On your own by train | Guided day tour | |
|---|---|---|
| Getting there | Tobu from Asakusa, about 1 h 50 min direct; or JR Shinkansen + JR Nikko Line with one change | Coach or private car from central Tokyo, no changes |
| Cost per adult | about ¥8,480 for a shrines-only day, ¥14,080 with Kegon Falls (see budget below) | from $78 for group coach tours; private cars are priced per group |
| Kegon Falls same day | Possible with an early start; buses climb the Irohazaka road and can be slow in foliage season | Included in most tours we list |
| Flexibility | Full: stay as long as you like at each stop | Fixed schedule; private tours can adjust |
| Best for | Travelers happy to read timetables and walk | First-timers, families, short stays, anyone who wants the falls and the shrine without logistics |

A typical day trip follows the same loop: train or coach to Nikko, the shrine area first (it opens at 9:00–17:00 in summer and closes earlier from November), then the bus up to the lake if time allows, and back to Tokyo in the evening.
- Shrine area. Shinkyo Bridge and Toshogu, where guided tours plan 2–2.5 hours; add Rinno-ji and Taiyuin if you have 1.5–2 hours more. Toshogu is the one ticket most visitors buy: ¥1,600 for adults.
- Kanmangafuchi (optional). A riverside path with around 70 stone Jizo statues, 15 min on foot from the nearest bus stop.
- Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji. 40–50 min by bus each way; coach tours stop here for about 1.5 hours. A 97 m waterfall with an elevator down to a viewing platform (¥600), and a lake at 1,269 m.
The one-day itinerary has 4, 6 and 8-hour versions with timings, and how to get from Tokyo to Nikko compares the train options in detail.

Frequently asked questions
Is Nikko worth a day trip from Tokyo?
For most visitors, yes. The Tobu limited express takes about 1 h 50 min, and the shrine area alone, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with 103 buildings, fills half a day. Add Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji if you start early.
How long does it take to get from Tokyo to Nikko?
About 1 h 50 min on a direct Tobu limited express from Asakusa. By JR, the Shinkansen to Utsunomiya takes 48 min and the JR Nikko Line another 42 min, plus the change.
How much does a Nikko day trip cost?
Doing it yourself, about ¥8,480 per adult for a shrines-only day and ¥14,080 with Kegon Falls and the lake, using NIKKO PASS and SPACIA X. Group coach tours start from $78 per person.
Can I use the JR Pass to get to Nikko?
Yes on the JR route: the Tohoku Shinkansen to Utsunomiya and the JR Nikko Line. The Tobu trains from Asakusa are not covered. The JR TOKYO Wide Pass also covers the Nikko and Kinugawa through trains from JR stations.
Is NIKKO PASS worth it?
The World Heritage Area pass costs ¥3,000 and covers the basic Tobu fare from Asakusa plus town buses. The All Area pass, ¥8,000, adds buses to Lake Chuzenji and the lake cruise. Neither includes the limited express charge or shrine tickets.

Should I take a tour or go on my own?
