How to Get from Tokyo to Nikko (Train, Shinkansen or Tour)

The easiest way from Tokyo to Nikko is the Tobu limited express from Asakusa: about 1 h 50 min with no change, ¥3,340 one way on the SPACIA X. If you have a JR Pass, take the Shinkansen to Utsunomiya and change to the JR Nikko Line (1 h 30 min on the trains). Without either, a day tour from central Tokyo does the transport for you.

Option 1: Tobu limited express from Asakusa

Tobu Railway runs the fastest direct trains. The Limited Express SPACIA X and the “Kegon” go straight from Asakusa (also stopping at Tokyo Skytree and Kita-Senju) to Tobu-Nikko in about 1 h 50 min source.

  • What you pay: a basic fare of ¥1,400 plus a seat charge. On the SPACIA X the standard seat charge is ¥1,940 (¥2,140 in busy periods) and a Premium Seat is ¥2,520 source.
  • Sample times: 9:00 from Asakusa → 10:50 at Tobu-Nikko in the outbound timetable we read; the latest SPACIA X back from Tobu-Nikko was 17:44 from Tobu-Nikko → 19:35 at Asakusa. Other Tobu limited expresses run too; check the day’s timetable.
  • Which train: The 'Kegon' runs direct to Tobu-Nikko; on a 'Kinu' you change at Shimo-Imaichi (same platform) source.
  • Booking: seats are reserved. Tickets go on sale at 9:00 a.m. one month before the travel date, at Tobu stations or online via TOBU Japan Trip Tickets (tobu-japantrip-tickets.com) source.
  • Cheapest way: Local trains need only the basic fare ticket; limited express seats are reserved and need an extra limited express ticket. Local trains take longer and need changes, but cost only the ¥1,400 fare.
  • From Shinjuku or Ikebukuro: direct limited expresses run through from JR lines and take about 2 hours source. The JR Shinjuku / Ikebukuro direct trains are not covered by NIKKO PASS.

If you are a foreign visitor, the NIKKO PASS replaces the basic fare and adds buses in Nikko; you still buy the limited express seat separately.

Option 2: JR Shinkansen and the JR Nikko Line

The JR route needs one change but is the one to take with a JR Pass.

  1. Tohoku Shinkansen, Tokyo or Ueno → Utsunomiya: 48 min on a Yamabiko source. Not every Shinkansen stops at Utsunomiya; the fastest Hayabusa trains do not.
  2. JR Nikko Line, Utsunomiya → Nikko: 42 min on a local train, about one train an hour in the middle of the day source.

One way costs about ¥5,260 with a non-reserved Shinkansen seat (¥5,790 reserved) (route-search fare; check at the station).

JR Pass: the nationwide JAPAN RAIL PASS covers JR Group trains, including the Shinkansen source, so this route costs nothing extra. It does not cover Tobu trains.

JR TOKYO Wide Pass: ¥16,000 for 3 consecutive days. Covers reserved ordinary seats on the Nikko, Kinugawa and SPACIA Kinugawa through trains from JR lines, and regular Tobu trains between Shimo-Imaichi and Tobu-Nikko source. A JR round trip to Nikko costs about ¥10,520, so the pass pays off only if you use it for more trips in those three days.

Which route should you take?

  • No rail pass: Tobu from Asakusa. No change of train, and cheaper than the Shinkansen route.
  • JAPAN RAIL PASS: JR via Utsunomiya. You only need to check the Shinkansen stops at Utsunomiya.
  • Staying in Shinjuku: the direct limited express from Shinjuku saves the trip across town to Asakusa, but it is not covered by NIKKO PASS.
  • Want Kegon Falls with no planning: a tour (below).
